13. When Asking for Help, Appeal to Self-Interest — Never to Mercy or Gratitude
reciprocity
The principle
People do not feel obliged to those they have helped before; they feel free of further obligation. Frame every request as a benefit they receive.
The application
Translate your ask into their language: what does helping you give them — status, reciprocity, optionality, alignment with a goal already in motion? Mercy expires fast. Self-interest renews itself.
The defensive tell — how to spot it being run on you
When someone asks for a favour by emphasising how much they helped you in the past, they are pulling on a ledger that does not exist in the way they imagine. Help if helping is in your interest now. Decline politely if not; debts owed are stories, not contracts.
