The 48 Laws of Power · law 48 of 48

48. Assume Formlessness

adaptability

The principle

By taking a shape, by having a visible plan, you open yourself to attack. Stay adaptable and on the move; accept that nothing is certain and no law is fixed.

The application

The final law. Every other law in the book is a form. This one says: do not become any of them permanently. The longest-running power is the one that cannot be summarised in a single sentence by an enemy.

The defensive tell — how to spot it being run on you

When a competitor is impossible to categorise — neither cheap nor premium, neither niche nor mass, neither one thing nor another — do not call them confused. They are following this law. The hardest target to attack is the one that will not hold a shape long enough for a punch to land.
