The Stoics did not write to be read. They wrote to remember. Marcus Aurelius wrote his journal alone, on campaign, never expecting eyes on it. Epictetus had been a slave. Seneca was eventually ordered to die by his own student. The philosophy you are about to use was tested under the worst conditions humans can survive — and they did.

Chapter 1 · Epictetus's first line

"Some things are in your control. Others are not."

The single most important Stoic exercise. Write down what's pressing on you right now. Then — honestly — sort each item into what you can act on, and what you cannot. The pile that's left is your work. The other pile, you set down.

Chapter 2 · Memento mori

"You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do."

Marcus Aurelius wrote that to himself one night. The exercise is not morbid — it is clarifying. Enter your birthdate. Each square is one week of an 80-year average life. The filled squares are gone. What you do with the rest is the entire question.

Chapter 3 · A Marcus exercise

"Look at the things from above."

An exercise Marcus performed on himself. Begin at your desk. Pull back. The room. The building. The street. The city. The country. The continent. The Earth. The solar system. The galaxy. How important is this problem now?

Chapter 4 · The four cardinal virtues

Wisdom · Courage · Justice · Temperance.

All Stoic ethics rest on these four. Honestly rate yourself, today, on each. The point is not to score well — it is to know which to practise tomorrow.

Wisdom · σοφία

Seeing things as they are. Distinguishing what helps from what doesn't. Acting on the truth even when it costs you.

Courage · ἀνδρεία

Doing the right thing under fear. Not the absence of fear — the act done despite it. Confronting the small, daily cowardices is half of it.

Justice · δικαιοσύνη

Treating others fairly. Honouring contracts, giving credit, telling the truth. Stoic justice is unsentimental — it is owed, not given.

Temperance · σωφροσύνη

Self-mastery. Knowing when enough is enough. The hardest of the four because it is the one that argues with you constantly.

Chapter 5 · Premeditatio Malorum

Lose them — briefly — in your mind. Then come back.

Seneca's exercise: pick someone or something you love. Imagine, concretely, losing it. Spend two minutes there. Then return. The grief that briefly visits is the gratitude you have not been feeling.

Chapter 6 · Voluntary discomfort

Practise being poor — for one hour, on a Tuesday.

Seneca, advising a wealthy student, told him to spend a few days each month sleeping on the floor and eating only bread. The aim was not the suffering. It was to learn that the thing he feared most — losing his comfort — was not, in fact, that bad. The fear loses its grip when you visit it on purpose.

Chapter 7 · Marcus's actual practice

Three questions. Every evening. For 18 years.

Marcus Aurelius did not pick up his journal to feel better. He did it to improve. The Meditations is what was left of that habit. The three questions below are the structure he used. Try one evening. Try another. The 18 years take care of themselves.

Chapter 8 · Voices of the dead

Marcus. Epictetus. Seneca. Shuffled.

Each refresh draws another line from one of the three voices. Save the ones that find you. Return when you need them.
