22. Use the Surrender Tactic: Transform Weakness Into Power

yielding

The principle

When you are weaker, do not fight for honour's sake — surrender. Surrender gives you time to recover, time to torment the victor, and time to wait for his power to wane.

The application

A losing position fought to the bitter end forecloses every option. A conceded position keeps every option open. Yielding now to fight later is, professionally, the single most underused move there is.

The defensive tell — how to spot it being run on you

When an opponent unexpectedly capitulates with grace, do not assume victory — assume they have computed something. The capitulation is often the opening of a longer game in which they will hold ground you did not realise was theirs.
